Build a paper goal

Explore how a strong base helps a tiny goal stand up.

Engineers try ideas, observe what happens and change one thing at a time. Build a small paper goal and test it with a rolled paper ball. Ask a grown-up for help with cutting.

Gather your materials

Scrap paper; tape; ruler; a paper ball; child-safe scissors with grown-up help.

Give it a try

  1. Fold two paper strips into upright posts and tape them to a folded base.
  2. Connect the posts with a third strip for the crossbar.
  3. Roll a paper ball gently toward the goal.
  4. Widen the base or add folded braces. Try again and compare what changes.
